As on 24th March 2015, I was at Gateway of Assam. A decade back, the 19th century that was built by the British on the banks of the Brahmaputra, started tilting and sinking.
The structure was built in 1874 to welcome then viceroy of India Thomas George Baring, who arrived in the city by the river bank near Surkeshwar ghat. He was also known as Lord Northbrook. It was at this spot from where Gandhi’s ashes were immersed into the river. Tagore is also said to have spent some time here.
