POLICE BAZAR POINT-SHILLONG Shillong, the capital of Meghalaya, has a rich historical and geographical significance. Originally a small village, it gained prominence in 1864 when it was designated as the civil station for the Khasi and Jaintia Hills. For many years, it served as the summer capital of Eastern Bengal and Assam. In 1874, with the formation of Assam as a Chief Commissioner’s Province, Shillong was chosen as the administrative capital. |

A devastating earthquake in 1897 necessitated the complete reconstruction of the city. Later, in January 1972, Shillong became the capital of the newly established state of Meghalaya.
Situated in the eastern part of Meghalaya, Shillong stands at an elevation of 1,520 meters (4,990 feet) above sea level, spanning approximately 6 kilometers on an elevated plateau. The city is bordered to the north by the Umiam gorge, to the northwest by the imposing Diengiei Hills—which rise to 1,823 meters (6,077 feet) above sea level—and to the northeast by the hills of the Assam valley. Shillong is nourished by the Umshyrpi and Umkhra rivers, which eventually converge to form the Umiam River.
This blend of historical significance and natural beauty makes Shillong a remarkable destination in northeastern India.
