On 17th October 2025, the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), North
Tripura, successfully conducted a Legal Awareness Programme at the West
Panisagar Gram Panchayat under Panisagar RD Block. The programme focused on the
NALSA (Legal Services to Persons with
Mental Illness and Persons with Intellectual Disabilities) Scheme, 2024,
aiming to inform the local community about the legal rights and services
available to persons with mental and intellectual disabilities.
The event was an important initiative under the mandate of the National
Legal Services Authority (NALSA), which ensures that vulnerable groups receive
access to justice without discrimination. With the increasing need to support
individuals with special needs, the 2024 scheme plays a vital role in
empowering them and their caregivers with legal knowledge and support
mechanisms.
Advocate Bikash Acharjee and Advocate Piklu Debnath led the session,
offering in-depth insights into the provisions of the scheme, the role of legal
aid institutions, and the legal remedies available for individuals facing
neglect, abuse, or denial of rights due to their disabilities. They emphasized
the importance of early intervention, legal guardianship, and access to
healthcare and rehabilitation services.
The programme was also supported by Para Legal Volunteer Sri Rajesh Chandra Nath, who played a
crucial role in community engagement and outreach. His efforts helped ensure
maximum participation from the local residents, especially families affected by
such disabilities.
The event concluded with an
interactive session, where community members raised questions and shared their
concerns. The DLSA team assured continued support through legal aid clinics and
follow-up initiatives.
